Most of us like to spend our spare time in the outdoor area of our home, where we can rest and unwind, entertain friends and family, or just spend the days outdoors without compromising comfort. When it comes to creating an exceptional outdoor setting in your home, consider outdoor rugs. They’re as aesthetically pleasing as they are functional.

There are multiple types of materials to choose from when it comes to outdoor rugs. When browsing for your next outdoor rug your first choice will be between either natural or artificial materials. A lot of people think that natural fiber rugs are less likely to stand the test of time and survive under most weather conditions in outdoor settings. While they may deteriorate faster than artificial fiber rugs, there are still weatherproof, durable, and eco-friendly options when it comes to natural fibres. Of course, each material has its pros and cons.

In addition to their ability to survive weather conditions. Natural rugs are often preferred for the aesthetics of their materials. Especially when styling an outdoor area, natural fibres and their colour tones will always compliment the other materials and landscaping in your yard. In addition to being visually pleasing, natural fibres are far more sustainable and eco-friendly.

These are all considerations to factor into your decision when looking for the perfect outdoor rug. We’ve listed some of our favourite natural materials below to help you pick the right fit for your home!

Jute Rugs:

In the realm of natural rugs, the most common has to be jute rugs. They are not as soft as other materials, however, they are tough enough to survive your outdoors. If you’re looking for something natural, easy to manage, and durable, jute is a great option. It’ll fit easily under any setting and on any surface.

Jute is also easy to maintain and clean. You’ll be able to easily remove dirt, food, and even pet hair with simple vacuuming or sweep as the flat surface of this fibre won’t catch and hold any particles. With jute, you also have the choice of multiple colors. From olive green to neutral earth tones, jute is the perfect color to compliment any outdoor palette.

Sisal Rugs:

This textured look will add to your outdoors and help up the ambiance. Like jute, sisal isn’t super fibrous, however, if you want something softer you can opt for a blend of wool and sisal fibers. As both these materials are sustainable, it’s another eco-friendly choice.

Sisal is also quite durable and will hold up under children and pets. The one thing you want to watch out for with Sisal is excess moisture. If you lie somewhere with a lot of rain this might not be the best option for your outdoors.

Hemp rugs:

Hemp is one of the earliest used materials used to make rugs in ancient societies history. It’s stood the test of time for a reason. The durable nature of hemp has made it an obvious choice for outdoor rugs. Hemp rugs are quite soft as compared to jute and sisal rugs too, so they offer a little more visual and tactile texture.

The resilient nature of hemp makes it a good option for outdoor usage too. It’s an extremely durable natural material. Hemp rugs come in a variety of patterns and colors too, so they can fit even the most unique homes.
